Parents

William Hingston = Amy Algar1

Married 25 April 1734, Holbeton2

William Hingston:

Baptised 4 April 1709, Holbeton3

Buried 18 January 1781, Holbeton4

Although William would have stood to inherit substantially had the lines of his younger brothers Henry and John failed, William appears in his father's will mainly as a trustee. But note that by this time (1754) he was 45, married with a family, and it is likely that he had already received his portion. No will of William's own is known, and we know very little of him directly.

William seems to have been close to the family of his brother Andrew. He was appointed guardian to Andrew's children during their minority, both his own having died very young, and the inscription on his gravestone may have been genuinely felt. He is buried beside the grave of his second daughter, who is unusual in having a headstone. In the will of his brother he is described as 'of Calstone', but he purchased the farm at Ashford, Aveton Gifford, which passed to his nephew Andrew who was residuary legatee of his estate.

Baptised 20 November 1744, Holbeton

Died 25 May 1802, Holbeton28

Buried 25 May 1802, Holbeton29

In his will of 24 May 1802 Andrew is said to live at Adston in the Holbeton parish. He bequeathed £100 to each of his children, except for Andrew who was residuary legatee.

Honour Balsom:

Alias Honour Hingston (20 June 1772)

Born about 175130

Died 10 October 1834, Holbeton31

In Andrew's will she received Skinner estate at Bridgend, Holbeton, together with 2 cows, best bed and bedstead, one thing of a sort of household goods and furniture, and £10. Financial responsibility for her children passed to her eldest son together with the residue of the estate including Andrew's house, and guardianship of the minor children to her brother-in-law William.

We cannot now know the circumstances behind this slightly surprising testamentary disposition. Even if she was estranged from her husband it would be unusual to leave property to her absolutely, rather than as a life interest, because if she married again it would be likely to deprive their children of their right to inherit in turn.

Sources

1 : In the Holbeton parish register she appears consistently as Amy (or Amey), but A & D (and the IGI) call her Mary. Either A & D's informant had simply misremembered, or Mary is the name by which she was known in the family. It may be significant that she called one of her daughters Mary, but not Amy.

4 : Parish register 18 Jan 1781 'William Hingston the elder'

5 : Parish register 10 Oct 1783 'Amy Hingston'. This is almost certainly her burial record, as the only other Amy Hingston known at Holbeton at that period was a grand-daughter who is shown in A & D as marrying and raising a family.
