William Hingston = Lydia Grubb
William Hingston:
Born 17431
Baptised 20 May 1743, Holbeton2
Died 15 June 1825, Holbeton3
Buried 20 June 1825, Holbeton
William seems to have been close to the family of his brother Andrew. He was appointed guardian to Andrew's children during their minority, both his own having died very young, and the inscription on his gravestone may have been genuinely felt. He is buried beside the grave of his second daughter, who is unusual in having a headstone.
In the will of his brother he is described as 'of Calstone', but he purchased the farm at Ashford, Aveton Gifford, which passed to his nephew Andrew who seems to have been residuary legatee of his estate.

1 : His gravestone states that he was in the 82nd year of his age.
2 : Parish records 20 May 1743 'William Hingston son of William, bapt'
3 : Gravestone is inscribed with a date of death as 15 June 1825.
4 : The marriage date has been quoted as 7 May 1776, but the source of this is not clear and it does not tie in with the 1772 register entry for their first daughter which describes Sarah as 'daughter of William Hingston and Lydia', implying they are already married. The Allen and Dymond entry for this marriage is illegible but is fully consistent with Lydia Grubb being the name of his first wife.
5 : Parish records 15 Aug 1778 'Lydia Hingston'
7 : Parish register 12 May 1772 'Sarah Hingston an infant'
8 : Parish register 28 March 1778 'Lydia the Daughter of Mr William Hingston and Lydia his wife was born and baptised and was received into the Congregation August ye 15th 1778' 15 August was the day of her mother's funeral.
9 : Gravestone beside her father
